Zane is cold and distant and prefers to keep himself aloof from others. He finds it extremely difficult to be vulnerable or even show the barest hint of emotion in front of others, so he keeps up a wall of ice between him and everyone he meets. This leads to most people assuming he's rude, vain, and thinks he's better than everyone else. He's okay with that because it means people are less likely to talk to him. In reality, he's deeply socially awkward and keeping some very sensetive secrets, so it's a relief when people avoid him. Over a long period of time, Ronan is able to erode Zane's defenses and manages to become genuine friends with him, which leads to Zane being able to open up a little more to the rest of the group, especially Naia who he's been attracted to since he first met her. Zane is indifferent to Emris at first, but becomes increasingly unsettled by the feeling of adopting Emris as a sort of little-brother figure who must be protected at all costs. The last time Zane had a brother, things didn't end so well. He's afraid to try again with Emris, but he also can't let anything happen to him.
